Angelos is an academic clinical trainee in neurosurgery in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Addenbrooke's Hospital and University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. His academic interests include neurotrauma, cerebrovascular diseases, and methodology of clinical neurosurgical research. His research has received support from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Angelos is a member of the Academic Committee of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and is involved with theIDEAL Collaboration, an international initiative which aims to improve the quality of research in surgery. He has been the elected academic representative of the British Neurosurgical Trainees Association (BNTA) since April 2012 and has led the establishment of a research network for neurosurgical trainees in the UK (British Neurosurgical Trainee Research Collaborative, BNTRC). The BNTRC has already completed the largest multi-centre prospective observational cohort study of chronic subdural haematoma worldwide (1200 patients, 26 UK units) and now aims to be successful in delivering two randomised trials. The RESCUE-ASDH trial (£1.4 million; NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme) is focussing on patients with acute subdural haematomas (ASDH). When an ASDH is evacuated, the bone flap can be left out or replaced prior to closing the skin. The trial will compare these two specific components of the operation to remove an ASDH. The trial is aiming to recruit 990 patients and will take place across several sites in the UK and worldwide. The Dex-CSDH trial (£1.2 million; NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme) is focussing on patients with chronic subdural haematomas (CSDH). The trial is aiming to examine whether a two-week course of dexamethasone can improve outcomes by reducing the rate of surgical interventions and the recurrence rate. The sample size is 750 patients and the study will be rolled out across the UK.
In his free time, he is involved with the medical team at the Silverstone Circuit and enjoys playing chess, reading history and travelling.
